Campion Tennis Club under-8s have caused a major upset

CAMPION Tennis Club's under-8s caused a major upset in their first ever match in the LTAs national team competition by beating South Ribble Tennis Centre last Saturday.

Having entered the Aegon sponsored Mini-Tennis Team event for experience this year for the first time ,they ended up beating South Ribble - one of the North of England's biggest performance centres, 11-5.

Campion head coach Ben Saunders said: "I never expected anything from this event this year other than to give some of our brightest talent a bit of exposure and experience in an event like this.

“We know the other teams in our league well and they are all big tennis centres that are funded heavily each year by the LTA. I really didn't expect this at all."

He continued: "We believe this is just the beginning. We don't expect to win this event this year, even after this amazing result, but with all our talent/mini-tennis squads and the fact we are delivering our biggest ever schools programme with over 200 kids getting top tennis coaching in the first week, then I know we will be finding more and more kids who want to play tennis at a higher level.

“I hope to have more teams in this event and other age groups in years to come, and with over 24 children already identified on our scholarship programme, we believe we are well on our way to becoming a Mini-Tennis Centre of Excellence.
