MARINE FC are at the centre of a Football Association investigation after irregular betting patterns were seen prior to their UniBond Premier Division match with Matlock Town.
The FA have launched an open inquiry into the Mariners’ game at the Gladiators’ Causeway Lane ground on April 4 which ended in a 4-0 defeat for the Crosby side.
Major online bookmakers Sky Bet suspended betting in the build-up to the fixture following unusual amounts of money were placed on outcome of the match, heavily in the favour of a Matlock win.
When the Herald contacted the FA two weeks ago about the betting patterns it had yet to begin any investigations but this week has opened a probe into the affair.
FA spokesman Mark Hooper was unable to divulge any details of the case but said: “I can confirm that we have an open inquiry into this match.”
Marine chairman Paul Leary said: “I am shocked at the news of the investigation to be carried out by the FA Compliance Unit. I have told the Unit that Marine Football Club will co-operate fully with their investigation and provide any information that will help them with their enquiry.
“I await the outcome of the enquiry and will make a further statement at that time.”
