Matlock Town beat Marine 4-0 in the UniBond Premier Division

TWO goals in each half sent Marine tumbling to another defeat on Saturday, as Matlock Town were comfortable winners at Causeway Lane.

The home side were in the relegation places prior to this match and were in determined mood from the outset, although in truth would not have had to play as well as they did to beat a poor Marine side who failed to produce a shot worthy of more than a comfortable save all afternoon, the visitors’ misery being compounded with another red card, this time Karl O’Donnell going for an early bath after a second yellow late on.

Town took the lead on ten minutes when a loose ball in the box fell kindly for giant striker Danny Davidson to stab past Sean Lake from 10 yards.

Twenty minutes had elapsed before Marine forced the only real save of the day from Paul Pettinger in the home goal, Freddie Potter’s speculative long range effort being comfortably fielded.

The Gladiators had two strong penalty claims for hand ball waved away but were soon two up six minutes before the break, Ross Hannah finding space on the left to send over an inviting cross for Davidson to plant a firm header to Lake’s right.

Marine had a couple of flurries midway through the second half with crosses fielded by Pettinger but the Gladiators put the result beyond doubt on 84 minutes, a penalty being awarded for hand ball by Phil Brazier and the impressive Davidson claiming the match ball from the spot.

A minute later it was four as substitute Ian Clarke broke away down the right before firing home a low shot from the edge of the box.

O’Donnell had already been cautioned in the first half and got a second after a flare up with

home full-back Paul Riley near the corner flag, both players seeing yellow and O’Donnell the red.
