Waterloo Ladies go ton up to maul Carlisle Cougars

FIRWOOD WATERLOO LADIES marked their third game of the season with a 108-0 win over Carlisle Cougars and the possibly the fastest try in the team’s history after 11 seconds. Newly appointed Waterloo captain Beth Stott kicked off the game and a lucky bounce enabled quick winger Carys Hall to catch the ball and run it over the line seconds into the game. The try started a run of 16 for the defending champions and generated the ladies highest score since 2001. Within ten minutes the home side had pushed their advantage and scored two more tries, Carlisle realising they needed to stop the flow pushed Firwood Waterloo back up the pitch and camped on their ten-meter line. They looked dangerous as the hosts were slow in pulling the defence in but it held strong and the Cougars could not get through. The ball was turned over and run back up the pitch, some great linking play between the backs created more tries and the score was 59-0 at half time. Carlisle came back again after half time and for ten minutes kept Waterloo in their half but the ladies, who have been working on their defence this season, held strong and prevented a number of try chances by the Cumbrian visitors. Firwood Waterloo pressed every advantage and though Carlisle chased down every breaking run the visitors were just outpaced - with a final score of 108-0. Jo O’Meara, Firwood Waterloo Assistant coach, said: “We asked the backs to step up and they did, there were no selfish runs and the team work put the points on the board. Carlisle is a great team to play, whatever the conditions they compete at every breakdown and for every point. Their scrum half, Ashley Lloyd was rightly given the Wallwork Opticians player of the match by the referee for chasing us all over the park. We hope to build on the team work as we travel to Eccles for our next game.”Read
