Marine under-8s faced Northfield in the Summer League

UNDEFEATED Marine were up against a team they had not previously met in this Hightown Summer League encounter.

Marine went ahead when Peter Silcock was able to capitalise on an incisive pass from Bradley Robert, to poke the ball past a static Forefield goalkeeper.

Marine’s lead was almost doubled when the consistent Tom Flannery went narrowly wide with a free-kick from a dangerous position.

Forefield equalised in spectacular fashion when an unstoppable free-kick from wide on the right went into the top left hand corner of Marine’s goal.

In the second half it was Marine who were the stronger of the two teams with Max Smith coming to the fore, his hard work causing problems for Forefield.

There were few further opportunities for Marine, despite their dominance in possession.

The closest either team came to breaking the deadlock was a corner from Forefield which took a wicked deflection and bounced into the ground and over Marine’s bar.

Marine replied with a credible claim for a penalty at the other end, but the referee judged that the ball had already gone out of play before a Forefield defender handled the ball.

Although there was a feeling that another goal would come, at the critical moment Marine’s forwards’ touch let them down. With a little more composure the Mini Mariners could have taken three points .

Man of the Match for Marine was Liam Bromilow.
