Hey on course to re-write history books at Northern

NORTHERN finished the weekend third in the league table, 16 points behind leaders New Brighton with three games of the season remaining after 143 and 31 run victories against Huyton and Ormskirk.

Last Saturday at Huyton Lane, Carl Hey, 46, Steve Mullaney, 78, John Wildman 72 not out, including five sixes from the first five deliveries of David Heye’s third over, led the cavalry against Huyton – enabling their side to amass a very healthy 252 for 4 from just 39 overs.

Mike Hutton, 20, and Mark Wilkie, 32,were the only players to show any resistance as Steve Mullaney, 3 for 35, Jack Woosey, 4 for 41, and Nick Woods, 2 for 11, did most of the damage bundling Huyton out for 109 after 35 overs.

Run machine Carl Hey, 66, who now needs 84 runs in three games to beat the Northern legend John Winter’s league record of 1,423 runs, which was made in the 1955 season, Steve Mullaney, 25, John Wildman, 39, and Mark Garcia, 17, steered Northern towards 196 all out in 67 overs at Moor Park against Ormskirk last Monday. Martin Farrell, 5 for 51, was the pick of the bowlers.

Phil Cooper, 1 for 10, Steve Mullaney, 2 for 8, and Francois Haasbroek, 1 for 11, had Ormskirk in deep trouble on 20 for 4.

But Ian Glayzer, 45, and Suwanji Madanayake, 93, put the visitors back in the picture, adding 110 for the fifth wicket.

Hey, 4 for 28, and John Wildman, 2 for 16, then turned the screw and mopped up Ormskirk for 165 after 45.5 overs.

On Sunday, the under-16s were dismissed for 99, Jack Boardman, 24, and lost their League Knockout Semi-Final by seven wickets against Fleetwood Hesketh.

In their semi-final, the under-20s posted 166 against Wallasey and won by 38 runs. Steve Mullaney, 54, Francois Haasbroek, 56 not out, and Phil Jones, 4 for 22, played the major roles. Back on the main square, man-of-the-match Steve Mullaney, 58, 2 for 11 and a superb catch, François Haasbroek, 28, and Phil Jones, 24, guided Northern to 164 for 7 in their 15-run victory over Highfield in a very exciting Final.
