Deventer satisfied with Waterloo’s first half of season

WITH no matches last weekend Firwood Waterloo's director of rugby Jan Van Deventer has had time to take stock as his side approach the half way point in their league programme.

"It is without doubt the best start we have had for a number of seasons," he stated.

"We began well with a win at home to Lymm and although we lost the next game at Kendal, not the easiest of venues, it was only by two points.

“We then beat Birkenhead Park before picking up a losing bonus point away to the then league leaders Harrogate.

"Although I was disappointed with the result against Chester we certainly made up for that with wins at Bradford and Bingley and at home to, at that time, unbeaten Percy Park.”

Unfortunately the games against Bradford and Percy Park came at a cost as injuries began to mount up resulting in losing the next four games although they did manage to pick up welcome losing bonus points away at Sandal and at home to Billingham.

"Although we have better strength in depth than last season we were never in a position to cover for so many players out injured," Deventer explained. "Full credit to the boys who came in, they could not be faulted for effort and to pick up two losing bonus points saved us from a complete points whitewash."

Back to almost full compliment away at West Hartlepool the side got their season back on track taking the honours 25-30 in a second half performance which was as good as anything they have produced so far this season.

"We know at full strength we are as competitive as any side in this league and that certainly showed at Brinkburn,” Deventer stated.

"However we know that we still have a long way to go.”
