JOSPICE are celebrating with the news that staff of Merseyrail have voted to support Jospice as their charity of the year for the next 12 months. Managers at Jospice attended an event recently in Liverpool attended by a number of staff of Merseyrail and many other local businesses to officially launch the fundraising year for the staff, and also "kick start" the year with a donation of £10,000 toward the work of Jospice.
Pat Murphy, Director of Fundraising at Jospice said "We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as the charity of the year, and to receive such a generous donation at the beginning of the year is such a boost to us, and a very strong message of commitment by the directors of Merseyrail. I have had an initial meeting with some staff and they are all so keen to support us, I am really excited about working with them over the coming months.
Maarten Spaargaren, managing director of Merseyrail added "Across our business, we are right behind supporting a local charity and charitable giving is an important part of our corporate responsibility strategy. Merseyrail staff choose the charity and show a lot of energy and initiative to generate funds. Last year, we raised £58,000 – we’ll try harder to top that amount this year".
A number of staff who work for the company had experienced first hand the work of Jospice as they had had close family cared for at the hospice in Thornton. Collecting boxes are already in all the M2GO shops on the Northern line stations, and many other fundraisers are on the cards for the staff from dress down days to parachute jumps.
