Merseyside girl with leukemia sees home transformed into winter wonderland

A LITTLE girl with leukaemia became a real-life princess for a day when her home was transformed into a winter wonderland.

Allanya Wrench came back from school to find a snow-covered scene straight from a Christmas movie, complete with full-size fir trees and a ‘fairy godmother’ – former Coronation Street and Waterloo Road star Angela Griffin – aboard a sleigh outside her home in Melling.

The brave four-year-old, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in January 2011, got to live her white Christmas dreams thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Fairy.

The winter wonderland treat last Thursday was kept a surprise from the youngster.

Mum Carolyn said: “Allanya loves princesses, so when she saw Angela her face lit up with a big beaming smile. She got hold of her hand and got up on the sleigh. She was just amazed and overwhelmed, and could hardly believe it.”

And actress Angela loved it too. She said: “ I’m so thrilled to be a Fairy godmother, creating that experience for Allanya and her family to enjoy.”

Little Allanya, who is being cared for by Alder Hey children’s hospital, began treatment the day after she was diagnosed and is now on maintenance chemotherapy.

Her treatment will carry on until March next year, shortly before her fifth birthday.

Carolyn said: “When you get that diagnosis your world turns upside down.

“She had a six-month intensive block where she was quite ill but since then it’s been maintenance treatment.

“She’s been so brave, all the children we have met are, it’s so inspirational. It’s hard when she’s so young but we hope when she’s older she won’t remember too much of it.”

Allanya enjoyed a day at Cameron House on Loch Lomond back in March courtesy of Make-A-Wish, where she had her hair, nails and make-up done before putting on a princess dress.

And she was also invited to the charity’s Cambridgeshire ball in Peterborough as a special guest last month.

Carolyn said: “The ball was amazing, she was given all kinds of gifts.

“She was really spoilt, she got to wear a big princess dress, people were coming over, kneeling and kissing her hand, she loved it.

“It’s been very hard as a family but these are the things that keep you going.”
