Liverpool ace Jamie Carragher supports local school children and the Plaza community cinema
LIVERPOOL defender Jamie Carragher has swept up the carpet at the Plaza cinema for the last time.
He joined local school children as they prepare to raise cash to replace the community venue’s shabby 35-year-old carpet with a brand new one.
Children from The Mount at St Mary’s will soon help remove the carpet and then take part in the forthcoming Sefton Triathlon, forwarding their raised cash to the cause.
And as the event’s patron, Reds ace Carragher gave them their full support.
He told the Herald: “I’ve come down to support the community. I used to come to the Plaza when I was a kid and I get down here as much as I can.
“By raising money for the Plaza teaches the kids good values which they will keep for the future. It’s also important to give the Plaza as much as we can.”
Relying on grants and donations to keep it running as it tries to beat off competition from multinational cinemas, the community cinema is run with a philosophy of making it as accessible to as many people in the community as possible.
Manager of the Plaza Chris Halliday said: “It’s tremendous that we are getting this support which the whole community will benefit from.
“We need as much help as we can get because we are only a small independent venue. We are trying to lift the Plaza which sees its 70th birthday in September in any way we can.
The new carpet will come in just as we have completed the building’s front with money from a grant.
