Award-winning cake spooking Crosby shoppers

SUGARY ingredients are the only sweet thing about Count Cake-ula.

The monster creation by award-winning cake designer David MacCarfrae will be haunting shoppers on College Road this Hallowe’en.

Mr MacCarfrae said: "Count Cake-ula took over 200 hours to make and weighs over three stone."

The shop has also got a Haunted House of Hallowe’en Cakes display for visitors to enter ‘if they dare’.

The display is inspired by family holidays to Blackpool Pleasure beach in the 1970s.

Mr MacCarfrae, of David’s Cakes of Distinction, said: "I get very nostalgic remembering my childhood.

"Mum and Dad used to take me and my brother John on holiday to Blackpool to see the lights. As we all walked along the Golden Mile our faces were always illuminated with excitement. Candyfloss, toffee apples and funfair rides always made these holidays special.

"We always used to pass a little kiosk with the hand-painted sign saying ‘Gypsy Rose-a-Lee this way.’ I remember seeing a mysterious buxom lady, adorned with gold and jewels staring at me with a mysterious but reassuring smile on her face.

"I thank her for looking at me the way she did as her pose has always stuck in my mind. I made a cake for the display as a tribute to her."

There is also a website where visitors can tour the Haunted House of Spooky Cakes and take a trip on the ghost train.
