ELVIS is in the building. In Crosby Civic Hall that is, or very nearly.
The King arrives in the form of the country’s two most successful Elvis impersonators – Steve Preston, the only tribute artist to perform on the Royal Command Performance and European Champion Chris Connor.
Two years ago he was working on building sites.
“I always liked his songs,” says Chris, 31, from Manchester.
“I used to borrow my dad’s records and listen to them in the loft.”
A part time pub singer, he focused on Elvis after people said he sounded and looked like him.
“ I have to dye my hair jet black and keep it long, but before I never saw the resemblance,” he says. “I’ve also grown big sideburns - the fake ones don’t look right. Luckily my girlfriend is a huge Elvis fan.”
